Your first run, in the order that works. No filler, no long preamble — just what to do in the first five days and the mistakes that end runs before they start.

Short answer

Spend day one on wood and scrap only. Craft a Map (3 Wood at Crafting Bench 1), push the campfire to Level 2 before nightfall, and stay inside the firelight after dark. Everything else — exploration, rescues, biomes — comes after you can survive a night.

  • Day 1: wood, scrap, Map, Campfire Level 2.
  • Night 1: stay in the light. Do not chase fights.
  • Days 2–5: Crafting Bench 2, Bear Traps, a Compass, then the Dino Kid rescue.
  • Do not enter an outer biome in your first week.

Wood, scrap, map

Day one

  1. 1Pick a spawn spot near trees and start chopping immediately. Daylight is the resource you are actually managing.
  2. 2Gather scrap alongside wood. Metal is what unlocks Crafting Bench 2, and running out of it on day two is the most common early stall.
  3. 3Craft a Map at Crafting Bench 1 using 3 Wood. Do this before you explore anything.
  4. 4Feed the campfire until it reaches Level 2. That is your only real goal for day one.
  5. 5Build an Old Bed (20 Wood) if you have surplus, so a death does not end the run.
  6. 6Be back inside the firelight before dusk. The first night should not be a learning experience.

Why the Map is not optional

The map reveals through exploration, and fog never clears on its own. Three wood buys you a record of everywhere you have already been, which is the cheapest efficiency purchase in the entire game.

Do not be a hero

The first night

The night hunters in this game are faster than you and flagged immortal. The Deer runs at roughly 1.5x your sprint speed; The Owl and The Ram are close to 2x. There is no version of night one where chasing a fight is correct.

  • Stay inside the campfire light radius.
  • Keep fuel next to the fire, not in a distant storage pile.
  • Place any Bear Traps you have on the approach lanes before dusk, not after you hear something.
  • Do not run outside to recover a dropped item. It is not worth it.

The campfire is not decoration

Hunter damage is reported to spike when the campfire is out. Letting the fire die is the single most common cause of a first-night loss, and it is entirely preventable.

From campfire to camp

Days 2–5

  1. Crafting Bench 2 — 1 Metal, 5 Wood. Unlocks Compass, Bear Trap, Log Wall and Crock Pot.
  2. Bear Traps — 3 Metal each, reported max 8. Your answer to anything you cannot outrun.
  3. Compass — 3 Metal. Navigation home is the most dangerous part of any trip.
  4. Log Walls — 12 Wood each. Cheap structure that changes how nights go.
  5. Dino Kid rescue — once your campfire is at the required level and you have the Red Key.

If you only remember one table

Build priority

Every beginner guide eventually becomes a list of things to build. The useful version tells you what happens if you build them in the wrong order — and in this game the wrong order means arriving at night with no light and no traps.

Rule of three

Before every night, check three things: is the fire fed, are the traps placed, and do you have a light source? If any answer is no, fix it before doing anything else.

What ends runs

Beginner mistakes

  • Exploring without a Map, then walking the same ground twice.
  • Letting the campfire burn out because fuel was stored too far away.
  • Chasing a fight against something that is flagged immortal.
  • Entering an outer biome in the first week for one resource node.
  • Spending metal on weapons before spending it on traps and navigation.
  • Starting a rescue late in the day, so the escort happens at night.

What to do next

  • Craft a Map before you take your first exploration step.
  • Push to Campfire Level 2 and stop — Level 3 can wait for day three.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do first in 99 Nights in the Forest?
Gather wood and scrap, craft a Map at Crafting Bench 1, and get the campfire to Level 2 before the first night. The Map matters because the map reveals through exploration — without it, every step you take is a step you may have to repeat.
How do I survive the first night?
Stay inside campfire light and do not wander. The night hunters are faster than you and are flagged immortal, so there is no fight to win. Your job on night one is simply to be somewhere lit when it happens.
What should I build first?
Map, then Crafting Bench 2, then a Bear Trap and a Compass. Bench 2 unlocks the Compass, Bear Trap, Log Wall and Crock Pot, which is the difference between a campfire and a camp.
When should I go looking for the missing children?
Dino Kid is the first realistic target and is tied to Campfire Level 2–3. Do not attempt the others until your camp can survive a night without you standing in it.
Do I need a class as a beginner?
No. Class choice matters, but not as much as campfire level and light discipline. Play a few runs first, then use the class page to pick by the playstyle you naturally fell into.
